There are many anticipated visits for your child during their first two years. After the age of 3, you should plan on a check-up every year with the doctor.
To read about any of the vaccines your child will receive. Our office fully endorses the CDC’s vaccine schedule (http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/parents/index.html) and strongly believes all children should be vaccinated against these childhood diseases. If you do have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to discuss with your doctor. We welcome open conversations.
During the first six months, we will see you and your child monthly –
- Newborn examination – about 3-5 days old – At this first visit, your baby will be measured for weight, length and head circumference. The doctor will fully examine your child, review your pregnancy history and birth history, as well as answer any questions you may have. We will also discuss feeding your child – whether you have chosen to breastfeed or use formula. PLEASE BRING ANY HOSPITAL PAPERWORK FOR BABY WITH YOU TO THIS VISIT.
- 2 week check-up – At this visit, your baby will again have their weight, length and head circumference measured. The doctor will do a complete check-up and answer any question you may have. Mom will complete the postpartum depression screen.
- 1 month check-up – At this visit, your baby will again have their weight, length and head circumference measured. The doctor will do a complete check-up and answer any question you may have. Mom will complete the postpartum depression screen again. This visit will also include your baby’s first vaccine (Hepatitis B) if not received prior. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions about vaccines today.
- 2 month check-up – This is the first “big” visit for your baby in regards to vaccines. At this visit, your child will receive the following: Pentacel (DTaP, polio, HiB), Prevnar and Rotavirus. You will also have further opportunity to discuss vaccination, if desired. Your baby will again have their weight, length and head circumference measured. The doctor will do a complete check-up and developmental screen and answer any question you may have.
- 3 month check-up – At this visit, your child will receive their second Hepatitis B booster. We will measure baby’s weight, length and head circumference. The doctor will do a complete check-up and developmental screen and answer any question you may have.
- 4 month check-up – At this visit, your child will receive their second boosters of the following: Pentacel (DTaP, polio, HiB), Prevnar and Rotavirus. Your baby will again have their weight, length and head circumference measured. The doctor will do a complete check-up and developmental screen and answer any question you may have.
- 5 month check-up – There are no vaccines at this visit! We will review how your baby is developing, as well as begin to discuss the introduction of solid foods. At this visit, we will fully examine your child and obtain their weight, length and head circumference.
- 6 month check-up – At this visit, your child will receive their 3rd boosters of the following: Pentacel (DTaP, polio (IPV), HiB), Prevnar and Rotavirus. Your baby will again have their weight, length and head circumference measured. The doctor will do a complete check-up and developmental screen and answer any question you may have. If during influenza season (September – March), your child will now be old enough to receive the vaccine, if desired.
After reaching 6 months of age, we will begin to see you and your child every 3 months –
- 9 month check-up – Another milestone reached! During this visit we will review how your child has been growing (weight, length, head circumference) and eating solid foods. The doctor will do a complete examination and review your child’s development, answering any questions you may have. This is the first visit where you will complete an “ASQ” form which is a screening tool used by pediatricians to assess five areas of your child’s development: gross motor, fine motor, personal-social, language and problem solving. We will also be checking your child’s hemoglobin to screen for possible anemia, a concern in infants learning to eat solid foods. He/she will also receive their last Hepatitis B booster.
- 12 month check-up – Happy 1st Birthday!! How exciting that a year has flown by. Your child has changed in many ways since we first met and we are excited to see him/her grow and develop. At today’s visit, we will measure their weight, length and head circumference and complete a full examination. We will discuss their development, as well as eating habits. Today your child will also receive three vaccines: MMR, Varicella (chicken pox) and Hepatitis A.
- 15 month check-up – At today’s visit, we will again measure your child’s weight, length and head circumference and complete a full examination. We will discuss their development, as well as eating habits, sleep patterns and any other concerns you may have. Today your child will also receive two booster vaccines: Pentacel and Prevnar.
- 18 month check-up – At today’s visit, we focus a bit more on developmental screening including having you complete another “ASQ” as well as the “MCHAT” which screens for autism. We will again measure your child’s weight, length and head circumference and complete a full examination. We will discuss their sleep and eating habits and any other concerns you may have. Today your child will also receive one booster vaccine: Hepatitis A. These are the last round of boosters until your child turns 4 years old!
Beginning after the 18 month visit, we will see your child every 6 months until they are 3 years old.
- 24 month check-up – Happy 2nd Birthday!! The toddler years are both trying and rewarding. Your child is further declaring their personality and desires. Today, you will complete another “MCHAT” similar to the one completed at 18 months of age to assist in discussing your child’s development. At today’s visit, we will measure their weight, length and head circumference and complete a full examination. We will discuss your child’s eating and sleep habits, potty training, behavior and more! Please feel free to ask any questions on toddlerhood!
- 30 month (2 ½ year) check-up – At today’s visit, we will again measure your child’s weight, length and head circumference and complete a full examination. You will complete another developemental screening (ASQ). We will further discuss your child’s eating and sleep habits, potty training, behavior – answering any questions you may have.
- 3 year check-up –Happy 3rd Birthday! At today’s visit, we will determine how your child has grown, measuring their weight, height and head circumference. Today will be the first attempt to obtain your child’s blood pressure, an important measurement at this age. The doctor will complete a full examination, review your child’s on-going development, eating and sleep habits, potty training and behavior as well.
At 4 years of age and older, we will see your child ONCE A YEAR. Each visit will consist of measuring your child’s height, weight and blood pressure. In addition, we will screen your child’s hearing and vision.
Anticipated vaccines are as follows:
- Ages 4 through 21 – yearly influenza vaccine
- Age 4 – MMR and Varicella booster
- Age 5 – DTaP and Polio (IPV) booster
- Age 10 (girls and boys) – 2 or 3 dose HPV series over 6-12 months
- Age 11 – TdaP and Menactra (meningitis)
- Age 16 – Menactra booster and start Meningitis B
